Damien Wilson – Kansas City Chiefs

Only the Patriots are closer to the salary cap than the Chiefs, who are just $3.5 million under the cap.

Former Cowboy Wilson’s place on the roster would appear to be safe, with the Chiefs having picked up his club option to keep him around for 2020.

He carries a cap hit of over $5 million in 2020 and, depending on the protracted preseason workouts go, the Chiefs may find that too rich of a price having invested premium draft capital in a young linebacker in the draft.

After selecting Dorian O’Daniel in the third round back in 2018, the Chiefs selected athletic phenom Willie Gay Jr. in the second round this year.

Gay represented a risk after entering the draft with some off-field issues but the Chiefs could feel compelled to save money by releasing Wilson if that draft-day gamble looks like being vindicated.

Vikings and Bills trading Dalvin Cook trade would solve problems for both teams. dark. Next

Wilson provided a steady presence at linebacker last season and the Chiefs’ satisfaction with his performances was reflected by them picking up his option. Yet this is a team that lives and dies on the arm of Patrick Mahomes and extra cap space to negotiate what will be a market-setting contract extension is more valuable than what Wilson brings to the defense.
