Borussia Dortmund issue transfer warning to Liverpool over Jadon Sancho
Borussia Dortmund may have to sell Jadon Sancho, but not without a fight.
Liverpool would love to pry Jason Sancho away from Borussia Dortmund, but the German side are in no mood to do business with the Premier League giants. Jurgen Klopp faces a huge challenge in buying one of his former club’s most valuable players.
When asked about reports linking Sancho with a move to Anfield, Dortmund manager Sebastian Kehl quickly told the press there was “nothing” to the idea. Instead, club officials fully intend on keeping Sancho in black and yellow for at least one more season.
The reality for Dortmund officials is that they will face a tense summer in their efforts to keep hold of Sancho. He’s attracted a ton of notoriety for his terrific Bundesliga performances this season. His electric ability to dribble past opponents makes him one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer candidates.
At the very least, Dortmund can take comfort in the fact that Sancho will be a very expensive purchase for any club that wants to acquire him. Even in the midst of the current global pandemic, it’s believed that it will require a bid of well over $100 million to get a deal done. That sum won’t be enough for Dortmund to replace a player of Sancho’s prodigious talent, but it could help soften the blow of losing such a bright star.

From the Liverpool perspective, Dortmund’s latest words are unlikely to decrease the club’s hopes of landing Sancho this summer. The club will view Kehl’s latest words as posturing. It’s still very likely that Liverpool will launch a formal bid for Sancho later this summer.
Whether or not they have the resources to outbid the competition is an entirely different question though. The list of clubs bidding for Sancho is likely to get much longer before his status for next season is resolved. Financial powers like Manchester City and Real Madrid have also been strongly linked with a summer move for the English starlet.
In the end, Jadon Sancho is set to be one of the most talked-about transfer targets of the summer. Dortmund have a ton of work to do if they want him to be a part of their long-term plans.
