How did a fan make his way into an empty stadium to try and take a selfie with Lionel Messi?

After a 98-day layoff, Lionel Messi’s long-awaited return for FC Barcelona lived up to the hype. Not only did he chip in two assists in Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Mallorca, but he even added a goal in extra time.

It was a welcome return to form for the GOAT, especially during this time where live sports are incredibly scarce.

However, his return was so eagerly awaited that one fan — in an empty stadium due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, mind you — made his way down to the pitch and even got close enough to Messi to try and get a selfie with him:

Though the camera doesn’t show it, the broadcaster adds to the comedy of an unbelievable situation when he notes, “Even he’s a little rusty, he’s had to stop and ask directions! ‘Which one is Messi?'”

How on earth did a fan almost get to Messi in an empty stadium?

Somehow, this is the rare category of sports clip that is both hilarious and extremely unnerving. During this period of social distancing, how on earth did this guy get into the stadium, let alone onto the field? Who was he? And did he use Portrait mode for his selfie, or just the regular camera?

In any case, Messi wasted no time adding to his ever-growing list of accomplishments. His late goal made him the only player ever to score 20-plus goals in 12 straight La Liga seasons. He’s also tied with Lazio’s Ciro Immobile for the most scores or assists (34) among the top five European leagues in 2019-20.

Messi is clearly the kind of player worth running onto the pitch for, especially since it had been nearly 100 days since we got to enjoy watching him play but maybe we should hold off on all future selfie attempts until the world has a coronavirus vaccine? Just a thought.
