Texas A&M football: 5 most underrated players in Texas A&M Aggies history
Underrated Texas A&M players: Trayveon Williams
This next pick might be a little bit of a head-scratcher but hear me out. Trayveon Williams’s career is still fresh but he never got the credit he deserved. Why? Well for starters, the Aggies went 24-15 during his time and got overshadowed by fellow SEC running backs such as Derrius Guice, Nick Chubb and Kerryon Johnson. And lastly, in his first two seasons, Kevin Sumlin was head coach, who is a pass-first type of coach.
But in year three, Jimbo Fisher came in as the new head coach and Williams saw his workload increase, racking up 271 of his career 600 attempts that season. And Williams made the most of his touches, rushing for 1760 yards (Aggies single-season record) and 18 touchdowns, earning All-Conference honors along the way. Williams would rush for over 225 yards three times that season, something no Aggie running back had accomplished more than once since 1995.
The Aggies saw average success during Williams’s career but had he not been on the field, the Aggies could’ve slipped to or below .500. And had Williams been the primary focus his first two years, his career numbers would jump off the chart and he could have some talk as the greatest running back the Aggies have ever had.
But for now, Williams ranks third in career yards and is tied for fifth for career touchdowns…in just three seasons. Texas A&M fans should appreciate what Williams brought to the table as those three years could have been a lot worse.
