WWE developmental talent tests positive for COVID-19
A second WWE talent has tested positive for COVID-19.
The sports industry is slowly trying to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, just like much of the rest of world. Professional wrestling has not been without its challenges. The independent wrestling scene has dried up and major organizations like the WWE are taping content without fans in attendance. News broke on Monday that a second wrestler has tested positive for COVID-19, showing that even the precautions that these promotions are taking will not protect everyone involved.
The news was first revealed by Ryan Satin of WWE Backstage and Wrestling Sheet. WWE then issued a statement on Monday that confirmed the situation (as reported by FightFul.com):
"“A developmental talent, who was last on site at WWE’s training facility on Tuesday, June 9, has tested positive for COVID-19. Since that time, no other individuals that attended the facility have reported symptoms. However, out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the health and safety of the company’s performers and staff, all talent, production crew and employees on site at the training and production facilities will be tested for COVID-19 immediately. Following the test results, WWE plans to proceed with its normal television production schedule.”"
Both the WWE and All Elite Wrestling have used roster talent as stand in “audiences” for the last few weeks. This is the second reported individual to have a positive test for COVID-19. That happened back in April, which was a tumultuous month for the promotion.
This news comes on the heels of other professional leagues like the MLB and NBA struggle to get players to confirm to a plan to restart their seasons.
