College football preseason can officially be underway on Aug. 7.

The NCAA Division I Council has approved the preseason plans for college football. This means preseason practice will officially be underway on Aug. 7.

The six-week plan begins on July 13 with enhanced training camps beginning on July 24. A four-week training camp begins on Aug 7 with the Week 1 college football games scheduled to begin on Sept. 5. The start of the season is set to begin with Week 0 on Aug. 29.

Many players have returned to their respective universities in early June, as they have been given the go-ahead by their state governments to return to campus and participate in voluntary workouts.

College football preseason dates are approved.

For a player to get ready for the upcoming season, coaches and trainers were hoping to have at least six weeks, if not closer to eight, in order to prepare for the season, especially after spring football was canceled for many programs before they began.

While players might test positive for the coronavirus as a handful of Alabama, Texas players, among others at other programs, such as Houston where they halted offseason voluntary activities out of an abundance of caution, the college football programs will be trying to co-exist with the virus, treat it, test for it and recover from it to return to play.

With the NCAA approving the preseason dates, fans can put these dates on their calendar and begin to look forward to the 2020 college football season. There are still hurdles to clear, but fans can think optimistically with the plan in place.
