In the penultimate game of the Bundesliga season, Schalke host Wolfsburg in Gelsenkirchen. The Royal Blues have had a tough second half of the season, continuing to fall down the table. Wolfsburg are looking to lock up a place in the Europa League with a win on Saturday.
Schalke are winless in their last 14 games. At the winter break, the Royal Blues were fifth in the table but have dropped down to 10th. Schalke’s problems are nothing new, they cannot score. The Royal Blues have failed to replace Klaas-Jan Huntelaar since he left in 2017. No matter who they bring in and who they start at striker, nobody has produced results. This season, only three clubs have scored fewer goals than Schalke. While the Royal Blues have not had many bright spots this season, American midfielder Weston McKennie continues to get better and has been the club’s best player since the season restarted.
Wolfsburg are sixth in the table with 46 points as they chase a spot in the Europa League for a second straight season. The Wolves can clinch a spot in the Europa Leauge with a victory on Saturday and a Freiburg loss to Bayern Munich. Wolfsburg have been significantly better in their away games this season and will look to continue that trend. The Wolves will play through Wout Weghorst when on the attack. The towering Dutch striker leads the club with 14 goals this season and has drawn the interest of a few Premier League clubs.
