4. Washington Redskins

The Redskins seem ready to see what Dwayne Haskins has over a full season, though the acquisition of Kyle Allen is interesting since head coach Ron Rivera and offensive coordinator Scott Turner had him in Carolina last year. If Haskins can’t beat out and hold off Allen, as unlikely as that will be, that’s going to be a problem.

Redskins senior VP of player development Doug Williams was recently on The Dan Patrick Show, and he said the idea of signing Kaepernick never really got off the ground.

“I think what happened here, we’re in a heavily, heavily military area,” Williams said. “And I think the guy that sits on Pennsylvania Avenue — 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue — made such a big stink of it, the fans in this area… might’ve been a tough situation for both the team and [Kaepernick].”

Cam Newton was the quarterback for most of Rivera’s tenure in Carolina, and Kaepernick is (was?) a similar style quarterback with running ability to burn. A failure to notably bolster the supporting cast around Haskins this offseason, not for a lack of effort in at least one case though, may set him up to fail. The climate around Kaepernick has cooled, so the Redskins could seize the opportunity and give him a legit chance to earn the starting job.
