1. His defense can help keep games close

Haskins isn’t ready to help the Redskins win shootouts anytime soon. That’s why the play of Washington’s defense will be crucial to his short-term development.

In particular, Haskins will benefit from the ferocious pass rush his franchise has acquired. No. 2 overall pick Chase Young will garner a ton of headlines, but the truth is the Redskins already had a solid front seven prior to his arrival.

Pairing Young with Montez Sweat will give Washington two of the most talented edge rushers in the NFL to build around. Veterans like Landon Collins and Sean Davis will do their part in the secondary. The Redskins have all the makings of a top-10 defense in 2020.

The more chances Haskins gets to make big plays in close games the quicker his progression as a quality quarterback is going to be. Washington isn’t going to dominate opponents this season, but their defense is going to keep them in a lot of close games. Asking Haskins to win games by scoring 20 points is a lot more reasonable than asking him to post 40 points per week. The play of the Redskins defense will boost Haskins’ development in 2020.
