Dez Bryant flirts with idea of joining 49ers in response to Kendrick Bourne tweet

After the injury to Deebo Samuel, the 49ers are scrambling for options at wide receiver. Dez Bryant is interested.

San Francisco 49ers multifaceted offensive weapon Deebo Samuel broke his foot while training with teammates last week, and as a result the team is rather weak at the wide receiver position. Add in the fact that they lost Emmanuel Sanders in free agency this past offseason, and the 49ers top returning option for Jimmy Garoppolo (outside of George Kittle, obviously) is Kendrick Bourne. Brandon Aiyuk will add some support, but he’s far from a sure thing entering his first NFL season.

The 49ers could very well have to look towards the free agent market to add depth at the position.

Should the San Francisco 49ers sign Dez Bryant?

Bourne, for one, seems to think so. The 49ers wide receiver tweeted out directly at Dez Bryant, and received a thoughtful response in emoji form.

Bryant hasn’t been considered a serious receiving threat since 2018, when he signed a short-term deal with the New Orleans Saints. Unfortunately, he tore his achilles in practice and hasn’t gotten much of a look since from NFL teams.

The veteran and former Dallas Cowboy has 531 career receptions for 7,459 yards with 73 touchdowns over his eight NFL seasons. He’s still just 31 years of age, but the wear and tear of his most recent injury has been tough to get over.

Bryant is far from a No. 1 option at this point in his career. Still, for a team with plenty of young options at wideout, he can serve as a mentor and a valuable member of the 49ers supporting cast, even once Samuel safely returns from injury. Dez’s frame also suits a red zone threat, making Garoppolo and the 49ers offense even more dangerous inside the opponent’s 20 yard-line.

It’s worth bringing Bryant in for a workout, at the very least.
