4. Can the secondary shore things up on the back end?

The front seven of the Texas A&M defense, though not without questions, seemingly has far more answers than the secondary. That isn’t to say that the Aggies don’t have any defensive backs capable of rising to the occasion and making plays against opposing passing attacks but rather that they don’t have any player on the roster who is undoubtedly going to step up for that unit.

While the Aggies secondary wasn’t completely abysmal in the 2019 season, they found themselves getting burned for big plays quite often. The one contributor from last season that they’ll be looking to get more big things from in that unit is safety Demani Richardson, a player who flashed high-end potential a season ago.

Outside of Richardson, Texas A&M will be asking players with no experience in College Station to come in and make a unit that was sometimes a weakness last season into a strength. The good news is that they have some talented youngsters who possess that type of ability.

Junior college transfer Brian George should be a nice addition at cornerback but the real excitement comes from Jaylon Jones and Antonio Johnson Jr. The pair of freshman defensive backs have elite potential, more so than any other player on the roster, that could change the face of the defense. For a group that was a top-30 defense a year ago, that could make Fisher’s team ultra dangerous.
