Espanyol made the unexpected announcement on Saturday that they’d fired head coach Abelardo Fernández. Just two weeks earlier, the former Barcelona defender had been hailed as the club’s savior following a 2-0 win over Alaves. A draw and two defeats ensued, however, which left Abelardo’s side eight points from safety at the very bottom of the La Liga table.
Director of sport Francisco Rufete has taken over, making him the fourth man to occupy the Espanyol dug-out this season, following Abelardo, David Gallego and Pablo Machin.
There has also been surprise at reports that Real Madrid right-back Achraf Hakimi, who’s spent the past two years on loan at Dortmund, will be joining Inter Milan for €40 million in the coming weeks. He’d been expected to return to the Santiago Bernabeu next term, but it seems that his reluctance to play second fiddle to Dani Carvajal has led to a change in plan.
