6. Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans

At this time a year ago, it was a former quarterback for the Tennessee Titans who was preparing for the most significant season of his career. After not extending him a contract, Marcus Mariota was very much entering “make it or break it” mode.

Well, unfortunately for Mariota, it was his backup Ryan Tannehill who came in and led the team all the way to the conference championship game.

Tannehill joined the Titans after he failed to meet expectations in Miami, and he was later traded to Titans last offseason. Nobody gave his arrival in Tennessee much of a thought, and now he is one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

The former first-round pick threw for 2,742 yards with 22 touchdowns in 12 games. He completed over 70% of his passes and threw only six interceptions. He proved to be the perfect quarterback for the team’s offense, which resulted in him signing a massive four-year, $118 million deal with $91 million in total guarantees.

Tannehill’s contract provoked quite the uproar. Some deemed the price far too high for someone who simply game manages, and a quarterback who cannot make the big-time throws. In the playoffs, he threw for just 369 yards in three games, and he failed to crack 100+ yards in the team’s first two playoff games.

Of course, how much can you get on a guy if the team is winning? Tannehill went 7-3 in the regular season as a starter, and 2-1 in the playoffs.

Tannehill will have a lot to prove this year. Specifically, he is worth the money he received from the Titans. That contract could prove to be a massive mistake if he flops, which is why he has a big season ahead of him.
