5. Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers were a force in 2019. Jimmy Garoppolo and head coach Kyle Shanahan led the second-highest scoring offense in the NFL with 479 points. The defense was also top-10 under Robert Saleh.

After a 13-3 regular season, the 49ers marched into the Super Bowl and represented the NFC in the league’s biggest game. Garoppolo had the team in position to win until he failed to make a few big throws, which gave Patrick Mahomes too many chances late.

Those missed throws opened the flood gates for debate on if Garoppolo can, in fact, be a Super Bowl-winning quarterback. The conversation around Garoppolo is much like the one that Jared Goff has to deal with. That being, is Garoppolo just a product of his offensively innovative head coach?

Garoppolo will have to win a lot of people over again. During the regular season, he compiled 3,978 yards and 27 scores with 13 picks. All of those were career-highs. However, in the playoffs, it was the run game that led the charge, with Garoppolo throwing for 427 yards in three games with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

With Tom Brady a free agent this past offseason, rumors swirled about him potentially joining the 49ers. The team would then ship Garoppolo out. Of course, those were just rumors and never held much water. But, the point holds that people were not too sold on Garoppolo being the man to win with the 49ers.

The 49ers are positioned to find themselves back in the Super Bowl again in 2020. Can Garoppolo redeem himself and lead the team to the championship? 2020 is the biggest year of the 28-year old’s career.
