The interior offensive line was not very good in 2019, and could be worse

The Chiefs boldly got away with making basically zero investment in the interior offensive line in 2019 – adding Martinas Rankin late in the preseason, and then losing him due to season-ending injury.

They added veteran free agent Stefan Wisniewski at midseason, who started the Super Bowl and was an excellent player for Kansas City. However, he left for the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency.

After this strategy “worked” in 2019, general manager Brett Veach doubled-down on it in 2020. The team is relying on the return of Rankin to boost in the interior, but did nothing to improve the most problematic position on the interior – center.

Yes, the team signed high profiled UDFA Daryl Williams and he may compete for the starting job, as might second-year man Nick Allegretti. But in all likelihood the team will roll back out Austin Reiter, who was far below average in 2019 and inspires little confidence now.

Andy Reid has a long history of getting the most out of unheralded offensive linemen – but 2020 will take some of the best work of the future Hall of Famer’s career. If he fails to find a way to improve the interior offensive line over 2019, Mahomes will pay the consequences.
