Kansas City’s secondary seems destined for a Super Bowl hangover

Like the interior offensive line, Kansas City has made very little investment in the cornerback position over the last several seasons. The 2020 offseason was no different and in fact, perhaps was worse in terms of talent-acquisition.

In the 2019 offseason, the Chiefs made excellent moves to bring in free agent Tyrann Mathieu and rookie Juan Thornhill at the safety position; and also added cornerbacks Bashaud Breeland and rookie Rashad Fenton.

But in 2020, the investment was even lower. The Chiefs didn’t bring in another safety to either compete with Daniel Sorenson. They also did not bring in another safety in the event that Thornhill, who tore his ACL late in 2019, is not ready to go at the start of 2020.

At cornerback, the news is worse. Kansas City lost its slot corner Kendall Fuller to free agency; and the thinness at safety means using Mathieu at cornerback (at least at the outset of the season) is not as much of a possibility as it was last year.

In addition, Breeland may be suspended for a period of time to start the season. The offseason acquisitions were minimal, with Antonio Hamilton and draft picks L’Jarius Sneed (fourth-round pick) and BoPete Keyes (seventh-round pick) the only notable moves.
