Nebraska football: 5 most underrated players in Nebraska Cornhuskers history
By John Buhler
Ahman Green was one of the best backs in Nebraska football history.
It wasn’t until very recently have the Green Bay Packers been able to run the football like they did when Ahman Green was in Titletown. The four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro was the perfect complement to Brett Favre in the Green Bay backfield in the early 2000s. Before he was winning all sorts of awards in the NFL, Green was one of the greatest Nebraska running backs.
Green won a pair of national titles in his three years in Lincoln. The Omaha native was First-Team All-Big Eight as a true freshman in 1995. He rushed for 1,086 yards on 141 carries for 13 touchdowns. After a slight downtick in performance as a sophomore with 917 rushing yards on 155 carries for nine touchdowns, Green bounced back with an epic 1997 campaign as a junior.
Green rushed for 1,877 yards and 22 touchdowns on 278 carries. Nebraska won its third national championship in four years, as Tom Osborne retired from coaching and Green went on to the NFL. He capped off his Nebraska career with a Second-Team All-American nod, rushing for 3,880 yards on 574 carries and 35 touchdowns in his three seasons with the Cornhuskers.
In the 1998 NFL Draft, Green was taken with the No. 76 pick in the third round by the Seattle Seahawks. After two years with Seattle, Green was traded to Green Bay where he would have seven incredible seasons for the Packers. He spent a pair of seasons with the Houston Texans in 2007 and 2008 before playing one final year in Green Bay in 2009. Green retired in 2011.
