10 NFL rookies who could become instant stars in 2020
Brandon Aiyuk – San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had Aiyuk rated as the top wide receiver in a stacked class. Many will disagree with his assessment, but the former Arizona State star is heading into a system in which he can swiftly prove his new boss correct.
Aiyuk will have plenty of competition for targets in a San Francisco offense that includes All-Pro tight end George Kittle and a plethora of young if unproven wideouts vying for a featured role in the passing game.
There may be more onus on Aiyuk to step up, however, following the broken foot suffered by last season’s rookie standout Deebo Samuel, whose status for Week 1 of the new season can be considered in doubt.
Between his speed, his underrated route-running chops and the vision and elusiveness he displays after the catch, Aiyuk should have little difficulty thriving in an offense that excels at getting receivers into space.
Kittle has become a superstar in the Shanahan offense while Samuel is on track to join him following a scintillating rookie season.
Aiyuk possesses the talent to get on the same trajectory. If he is asked to immediately take on an expanded role, the former Sun Devil could soon silence those who questioned the Niners’ decision to trade up for him.
