AFC. 4. player. 30. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. New York Jets. East

There is an outside chance it happens, but like their MetLife Stadium brethren, the New York Jets probably won’t have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. They have too much talent to win four or fewer games in 2020. However, there is a scenario where it all hits the fan and the Jets crash to the bottom of the AFC standings and into possession of the No. 1 overall pick.

This worst-case scenario hinges on quarterback Sam Darnold not living up to lofty expectations in the final years of his rookie contract and the entire organization turning on head coach Adam Gase. The former could happen, but let’s hope not. The latter could definitely happen, and it wouldn’t be the least bit shocking if the New York media eats Gase alive in the next year or two.

One would believe general manager Joe Douglas will be safe no matter what this year or next year’s zaniness of Jets football looks like. Keep in mind he didn’t draft Darnold or hire Gase. He was too busy working for the Philadelphia Eagles winning championships. If Douglas proves he can draft better than his predecessor Mike Maccagnan, he may be able to survive a wholesale rebuild.

With the Buffalo Bills feeling like a playoff team, the New England Patriots not being dead yet because Bill Belichick just signed an inspired Cam Newton off the street for next to nothing and the Miami Dolphins having the best quarterback to play at Alabama since Ken Stabler in Tua Tagovailoa, Gang Green might find itself sleeping in the AFC East gutter in the next year or so.
