No more no-name tight-ends

General manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy worked hard this offseason and in the draft to improve their tight end position.

After the Bears completed just 48 passes to six different tight ends last season, for comparison, Trubisky found Trey Burton 54 times alone in 2018. Of course, much of that had to do with Burton playing in just 8 games in 2019 after struggling to stay healthy in 2018 as well. So the Bears went out and signed Jimmy Graham and then drafted the top tight-end Cole Kmet from Notre Dame.

The combination of Graham and Kmet is expected to be a massive improvement from the collection of tight-ends the Bears attempted to plug-in last season. And with Nagy’s history with tight-ends, the Bears are clearly committing to finding their quarterbacks big targets in the middle of the field.

And with receiver Allen Robinson catching a team-high 98 balls last season with the next highest catch total being 79 from Tarik Cohen, it’s clear the Bears needed to add pass catchers to their offense. They’re hoping Kmet and Graham can provide at least a more consistent target for whoever ends up winning the starting quarterback job.
