FanDuel Golf: Rocket Mortgage classic preview and player picks
By Hans Geevers
FanDuel will provide the DFS community with a large number of contests for this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic. Let’s take a look at this week’s PGA Tour event from a fantasy golf perspective!
Before I discuss my FanDuel player selections let’s take a quick look at the golf course the field will play and the key statistics that I feel are the most vital to a golfer’s success this week.
The Rocket Mortgage Classic will be played at the Detroit Golf Club. The golf course is a par 72 that measures 7,340 yards. This track is a classical, tree lined course that was designed by Donald Ross. Donald Ross is know for his difficult greens. This course is certainly no different in that regard. To be more specific, this course features fast undulating greens that are a mixture of Poa Annua and Bentgrass. This track also features four par five holes. It should be noted that water is in play on only one hole.
The Rocket Mortgage Classic debuted on the PGA Tour schedule last year. Last year’s event was also played at the Detroit Golf Club. The winning score of last year’s event was 25 under par. This resort style course will likely be very vulnerable to scoring again this year.
The key statistics that I will be focusing on this week are (GIR) greens in regulation, scrambling, strokes gained putting, and par five scoring average.
Here are my FanDuel player selections for the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic!
Bryson DeChambeau $12,200
The 26 year old American has played eight tournaments on the PGA Tour this year. In those eight events played, DeChambeau has a very impressive seven top eight finishes, including a sixth place finish at last week’s Travelers Championship.
It has to be said that, in my opinion, Bryson DeChambeau is without a doubt the class of the Rocket Mortgage Classic field. Based on the last twelve rounds played on the PGA Tour, DeChambeau leads the listed Rocket Mortgage field in GIR (greens in regulation), strokes gained ball striking, and strokes gained off the tee.
I think that Bryson is highly motivated to get a win this week. Due to the fact this week’s field is not nearly as strong with regard to talent as the last three events on the PGA Tour, DeChambeau has an outstanding opportunity to get his first win of the year.
Kevin Na $10,400
He has four top 17 finishes on the PGA Tour in 2020, including a fifth place result at last week’s Travelers Championship. Na also ranks sixth in strokes gained putting (.840) on the PGA Tour.
Rory Sabbatini $9,900
Sabbatini has three top 21 finishes on the PGA Tour this year, including a 14th place result at the Charles Schwab Challenge earlier this month. He also finished third at the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic last year.
Will Gordon $9,100
The 23 year old American arrives at this week’s event on the heels of two consecutive top 21 finishes, including a third place result at the Travelers Championship last week.
Kyle Stanley $9,000
He finished 21st at the 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Additionally, Stanley finished 24th at last week’s Travelers Championship.
Michael Thompson $8,800
Thompson fired a first round 65 at the RBC Heritage two weeks ago on his way to an eventual eighth place finish.
