Pick Analysis. Smael Mondon. player. Scouting Report. OLB. Paulding County High School (Dallas, GA). 3. 814

There are a handful of five-stars Georgia can wind up with this cycle outside of quarterback commit Brock Vandagriff. One player the Dawgs cannot afford to let leave the Peach State is outside linebacker Smael Mondon from Dallas, Georgia. The Paulding County High School standout has a five-star rating in the eyes of the 247Sports Composite in this cycle.

Mondon is the No. 2 outside linebacker in his class, the No. 3 player from Georgia and the No. 26 player nationally. 247Sports is even higher on him, as they view him as the best player at his position and in Georgia with a No. 9 overall ranking. Either way, Georgia needs to protect its western border to prevent the Alabama Crimson Tide or the Auburn Tigers from getting him.

His primary recruiter is co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann. Despite being relatively green in his coaching career, Schumann has netted Georgia six five-star recruits the last few years, including defensive end Nolan Smith, inside linebacker Nakobe Dean and safety Richard LeCounte III. Mondon’s secondary recruiter is Dell McGee, so he’s got this.

Outside of very real threats in Alabama and Auburn, Georgia has to hold off the Tennessee Volunteers and the Oklahoma Sooners for Mondon’s commitment. Given that Dallas, Georgia isn’t all that far from the Alabama border, Schumann needs to hunker down and not let a blue-chipper like Mondon go to the Yellowhammer State. Otherwise, he’ll be playing his college ball for a rival.
