NFL Power Rankings: Top 10 wide receivers in today’s game
Lockett is not widely viewed as a premier wide receiver in the NFL, with the Seattle Seahawks’ run-heavy offense likely a contributing factor behind that.
However, since being drafted in the third round in 2015, Lockett has quietly developed into one of the most polished receivers in the NFL.
Lockett’s 1,000-yard season in 2019 was his first as a pro but there is evidence to suggest plenty more will be on the horizon for a player who was fourth in Football Outsiders‘ Defense-adjusted yards above replacement (DYAR) and sixth in Defense-adjust value over average (DVOA) last season.
An underappreciated route-runner, Lockett has already proved he deserved to go significantly higher than where he was drafted and, according to the NFL’s NextGen Stats, he and Russell Wilson lead the NFL in catch rate over expectation since 2017.
As D.K. Metcalf continues his ascension as a fearsome downfield threat, Lockett should find plenty of room to work with underneath regardless of whether he is operating from the slot or from the boundary.
He is the clear successor to Doug Baldwin in Seattle and, if the Seahawks opt to even slightly move their focus more towards the passing game, Lockett should be able to look forward to a further improvement in production after a career year in 2019.
