Giancarlo Stanton hits Masahiro Tanaka with liner in scary incident at Yankee Stadium (Video)
A scary scene unfolded at Yankee Stadium when Masahiro Tanaka was hit with a ball off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton.
Baseball is already in a dangerous territory attempting to play amid the spreading coronavirus pandemic across the country. The sport itself isn’t overly inherently dangerous like football or hockey or other physical contact sports, but that doesn’t mean that baseball players are totally devoid of risk.
That was a painful reminder as batting practice took place at Yankee Stadium with Giancarlo Stanton in the box as Masahiro Tanaka was on the mound.
Tha New York Yankees slugger who has one of the highest average exit velocities in baseball struck Tanaka with a line drive in a scary scene that left everyone on the field holding their breath as Tanaka writhed in pain.
Video of the line drive was documented by Max Goodman and it’s tough to watch. The sound of the ball making contact with Tanaka is troubling to hear. Be advised before clicking play on the video.
The training staff immediately ran out to the field to check on Tanaka’s condition. The reaction from his teammates on the field says a lot as they looked on concerned.
It’s startling to see how far the ball bounced off Tanaka. The ball landed on the dirt behind home plate and around the dugout.
It’s unclear where exactly the ball made contact with Tanaka, but it did look like contact was made with his head. Tanaka slowly walked off the mount after regaining his composure and is being tended to by the trainers.
