LSU football coach Ed Orgeron has picked up a new hobby: boxing.

Ed Orgeron was already in great shape, especially for someone who is 59-years-old, but now that he’s taken up boxing, he looks like he can go 12 rounds with Tyson Fury.

Orgeron has found a new hobby during the coronavirus pandemic after being a fan of the sport all his life but never had the time to learn. Now, he has the time, and he’s proving to be a quick study.

According to Ross Dellenger’s story on Orgeron’s new boxing hobby, he thinks it’s going to help him be a better football coach. For the reigning Coach of the Year who led LSU to an undefeated national championship season, that sounds promising for Tigers fans.

“I have extra time now,” Orgeron told Sports Illustrated. “I get in there in the ring and I am the pupil. We go at it. He teaches me. It’s really good for me to see how it is to be the pupil again. It makes me a better coach.” The photos in the SI story are incredible to see Coach O’s physique and how he can provide inspiration for people much younger that it’s never too early to work on yourself.

Ed Orgeron is already looking like a great boxer.

Coach O’s trainer, L.J. Morvant, says his newest pupil has picked it up as quickly as Joe Burrow picked up Joe Brady’s offense last season.

“He’s an incredibly strong and explosive man,” Morvant says. “He loves boxing. It was love at first punch.”

Coach O is training at Beat2Sleep which is just a short drive from Tiger Stadium where Orgeron has knocked out many SEC opponents in his short time in the Bayou. He’s getting private one-on-one sessions three nights a week and if he keeps it up, maybe he could challenge Tyson Fury to a match for the belt?!

Okay, first things first, that’s definitely not going to happen and this is just a hobby, but it’s easy to imagine and let your mind wander and think about Coach O stepping in the ring and seeing what he could do, albeit against other men of his age and experience level.

Maybe there’s a brawl-for-all among SEC football coaches to raise money for charity? Think how much money would be raised at the notion of Coach O and Kirby Smart or Will Muschamp duking it out. It would be amazing to watch, just like the 2019 LSU football season.
