Roger Goodell and the NFL are “encouraging” an NFL team to take a chance on signing Kaepernick ahead of the 2020 campaign. Doing so would cause a stir off the field, but it could also have serious on the field ramifications for the team that chooses to bring him into the fold.

Any team that signs Kaepernick should be ready to feel pressure to put him onto the field. In fact, there’s a cogent argument to be made that he should only be signed by a team that clearly needs to make a change at the quarterback position.

The big question, of course, is just how good Kaepernick can be after multiple years away from professional football. Even at his best, he was just an average passer. His real standout talent was his ability to make plays with his legs.

That might limit the number of teams that would really be interested in a player of Kaepernick’s style. His best chance to see the field in 2020 will be to see a run-heavy team suffer an injury to their starting quarterback. Someone like the Ravens or Seahawks might turn to him if they lose a star at the position. Kaepernick will continue to serve as a threat to starting quarterbacks around the league until he says he’s no longer interested in playing NFL football.
