10 NFL backup quarterbacks who can steal starting jobs in 2020
Brissett started 15 games for the Colts in 2019, but piloting them to a mediocre 7-8 record caused the team to shop for an upgrade in the offseason. Signing Philip Rivers has relegated Brissett to be the team’s backup heading into the 2020 campaign.
The Colts front office clearly believes that Rivers’ struggles in 2019 with the Chargers can be attributed to the weak supporting cast that surrounded him. There’s also a chance that Rivers is just over the hill in terms of being a quality NFL starter. The 38-year-old gunslinger doesn’t rely on mobility to be successful, but it’s possible his struggles last season were due to age-related regression.
The Colts coaching staff wants Rivers to be the answer to their offensive issues, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to give him unlimited time to figure this out. If Indianapolis struggles out of the gate, they will be willing to make the big call to go back to Brissett.
There’s also a reasonable chance that another team tries to swing a trade for Brissett if they lose their own starting quarterback early in the season. He may never be an All-Pro, but he’s one of the top backups in the NFL. Look for Brissett to find his way onto the field for someone in 2020.
