10 NFL backup quarterbacks who can steal starting jobs in 2020
The Jets are not a franchise that believes they’re headed towards any sort of quarterback controversy in 2020. They firmly believe that Sam Darnold has the ability to enjoy a breakout season.
There is a scenario where Darnold stumbles and necessitates a change though. Adam Gase and his coaching staff are under intense pressure to turn the Jets into playoff contenders this season. If Darnold struggles to protect the football early on, a conservative coach like Gase could talk himself into the idea that Flacco gives him a steadier hand at the quarterback position.
There are, of course, legitimate questions as to whether or not Flacco still has the ability to be a decent NFL starter. It would certainly require him to improve the level of play he demonstrated during his brief tenure with the Broncos.
Flacco does still have a big arm and the experience to manage games for a team with limited weapons. That makes him a reasonable gamble for the Jets if Darnold falls flat on his face. Inserting him into the starting lineup should only be done in case of an emergency in the Big Apple.
