Patrick Mahomes’ megadeal with the Chiefs is worth $450 million
Patrick Mahomes is going to be well-compensated as the face of the Kansas City Chiefs for the next decade.
Everyone knew this extension was coming, but Patrick Mahomes getting a 10-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs still managed to surprise.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal that would reportedly surpass $400 million will come in at a cool $450 million. This 10-year extension comes on top of the remaining two years of his contract, during which he’ll be paid $2.8 million this season and $24.8 million in 2021.
Per Schefter, there is a $140 million injury guarantee, and there is no language in the contract that ties its value to a percentage of the salary cap.
Patrick Mahomes’ 10-year extension is now the richest deal in sports history.
Fresh off their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years, the Chiefs are wisely locking down their superstar quarterback for life. The 24-year-old was an absolute force during Kansas City’s playoff run, spurring his team to comeback win after comeback win en route to a 31-20 victory in Super Bowl LIV. Perhaps just as important, he’s been a beacon of hope for a tormented fanbase that struggled through quarterback purgatory for years until he came along.
In just two seasons as a starting QB, Mahomes has earned two Pro Bowl appearances, a First-Team All-Pro selection, the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award, an MVP award and now, a Super Bowl MVP and Vince Lombardi Trophy. He’s thrown for 76 touchdowns in 30 starts in the last two years, along with 9,128 yards and four rushing TDs.
He is not only the face of the Chiefs franchise, but of the NFL in general. Locking him down through the 2031 season, by which time he’ll be in his mid-30s, essentially keeps KC’s window for title contention open for as long as he can remain healthy.
While there’s an unfortunate stigma with 10-year contracts of this magnitude, if anyone deserves this kind of hefty financial investment, it’s Patrick Mahomes.
