The Denver Broncos have a bright future, but who will remain for the ride?

Prior to the start of every NFL season, experts and fans alike pick their dark horse teams to clinch a playoff berth. This year, the overwhelming favorites to do so are the Denver Broncos.

Denver overcame a poor start at the first half of last season, thanks in part to the “not elite” play of veteran Joe Flacco. Once head coach Vic Fangio eased Drew Lock onto the field, the Broncos showed signs of progress and promise. This offseason, the Broncos future looks even brighter, mostly due to their impressive NFL Draft class.

2020 is the first test year for the Broncos. They can see what improvements they need to make if they want to be the Kansas City Chiefs’ main opponent for the AFC West title. That means players that don’t impress will be shown the door at the conclusion of the season and those who are set to hit the open market could effectively be replaced for better options.

Here are three players that are candidates to be handed their walking papers once the 2020 league year concludes.

Back in 2017, the Denver Broncos desperately needed a left tackle after the team declined Russell Okung’s option. Why sign a left tackle when they can just select one in the NFL Draft? The thing is, the draft class was pretty sparse in talent at the positon. So, general manager John Elway opted to select the tall and massive Garett Bolles out of Utah with the 20th overall pick.

Unfortunately, the honeymoon ended that night in Philadelphia. While Bolles rarely missed a game in his three-year career, he did have lapses in judgement.

In fact, he ranked in the top two for most penalties among offensive tackles in his relatively short career. That’s not a good thing, which is why Bolles is on the hot seat. He had his fifth-year option declined this offseason, meaning he has to play significantly better if he wants to be retained by the team.

The Broncos would be better off using their 2021 first round pick on a new left tackle.
