player. 14. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Boston Red Sox. 1. OF/DH. J.D. Martinez

J.D. Martinez is someone the Red Sox would like to have on the roster next season. Unfortunately, it will likely be out of their hands, as he will have a player option this offseason. If he performs anything like he has in recent years, he will decline that option, as it would see his salary drop over $4 million.

At 32, Martinez will be looking to secure one more big contract while he’s still in his prime. If recent moves are anything to go off, the Red Sox won’t be willing to splash the cash. Like JBJ, he’ll likely take the best offer that he gets, which likely won’t come from the Sox.

While it will be sad to see J.D. go, it may be a blessing in disguise. Martinez is getting to the twilight of his career, and he will be looking for as long of a term as possible on his next deal. Due to his insane production over the last few years, could see an Albert Pujols situation wherever he goes, where he eats up a ton of salary while his contributions on the field diminish.

Martinez will always be remembered in Boston for his outstanding 2018 season, where he batted .330 with 43 home runs and 130 RBIs. He was also a huge part of their postseason run, which makes his time in Boston an unmitigated success.
