Georgia football recruiting continues to dominate.

Kirby Smart has taken Georgia football recruiting efforts to new heights since he returned to Athens as the team’s head coach. With more five-star recruits signed than any other college football program since Smart took over for Mark Richt, Georgia is closing the gap on Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson at the top of the college football mountain.

The latest recruit to join Smart’s program at Georgia is four-star linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson who gave his verbal commitment to the Dawgs on Wednesday afternoon.

Dumas-Johnson is ranked as the nation’s No. 214 overall recruit, No. 14 outside linebacker and the No. 11 recruit in Maryland. Dumas-Johnson picked Georgia over Tennessee, Florida, Auburn and his home-state Maryland.

Jamon Dumas-Johnson brings more speed to the Georgia defense.

“The reason why I picked UGA is because I feel as though I trust them the most,” Dumas-Johnson said, via 247Sports. “Coach (Kirby) Smart and his staff I believe they can help me take my talents to next level.”

The SEC has long served as a football factory for the NFL with the number of draft picks that have come out of the top conference in college football. One of the reasons Dumas-Johnson wanted to play for Georgia is because of the way they develop their linebackers and get them ready for a career in the NFL.

“I like how they attack the ball (in) the running (game),” he said. “I think I fit perfectly in this defense. Also, (Georgia was the pick) because they are the real LBU.”

It’s easy to look at Roquan Smith and what he did for Georgia and speculate whether the 6-foot-1, 235-pound Dumas-Johnson can one day play a similar role in the middle of the Dawgs defense. Despite being listed as an outside linebacker, he has played both inside and outside at the high school level.

He projects as an inside linebacker in college, but that determination won’t be made until he arrives on campus and where his skills are needed most. But what’s clear today is Georgia football got a little bit better with the commitment from Dumas-Johnson as Smart’s recruiting should continue to see four and five-star recruits pick Georgia in the fall and winter.
