Oklahoma football: 5 recruits most likely to sign with Oklahoma Sooners
By John Buhler
Finally, we have arrived at somebody firmly in Oklahoma’s recruiting base. No, the Sooners won’t have to head to the DMV or to California for this top recruit. Of course, we’re talking about four-star defensive end Marcus Burris from Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana, Texas. The 6-foot-4 and 262-pound defensive lineman has 16 offers but is looking at three schools primarily.
Burris is the No. 8 strong-side defensive end in his class, the No. 17 player from Texas and the No. 103 player in the 247Sports Composite. Though Oklahoma is the leader for him, he will be getting a great deal of pressure for his recruitment from the Texas Longhorns and the Texas A&M Aggies. Will Burris go north of the border to Norman to play his college football?
Defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux is Burris’ primary recruiter to Oklahoma. Thibodeaux has helped land Oklahoma nine four-star recruits over the years. The Houston, Texas native specializes in getting so much top talent outside of Oklahoma’s borders. With Texarkana just down the road, we have to believe Oklahoma stands a tremendous shot of getting Burris’ eventual commitment.
With Texas A&M having a bit of a tumultuous offseason with additional recruiting violations, the Aggies might be finding themselves third in this three-man race for Burris. Texas has done a phenomenal job of recruiting under head coach Tom Herman. While Lincoln Riley specializes in coaching the quarterback position, he puts his faith in guys like Thibodeaux to get the thing done.
