Giants could cut DeAndre Baker after latest allegations

The Giants are running out of patience with DeAndre Baker

Following the news that he could be implicated in a cover-up related to armed robbery allegations from May, DeAndre Baker may soon be jobless as well. Baker and Quinton Dunbar allegedly facilitated upwards of $55,000 in payments to four victims, who then retracted their statements to police. While nothing has been proven to this point, the evidence against the two players is damning, enough so that the Giants could distance themselves from their former first-round pick quickly.

Baker hasn’t contributed much more than a headache for the Mara family in the NFL, and despite his once-glowing potential, to put up with these sorts of illegal activities was not in the cards when they selected him No. 30 overall in 2019.

Baker’s employment in the NFL could be the least of his concerns moving forward, as he could very well face prison time. In terms of his football future, the NFL tends to administer suspensions for cases such as these, especially if his conduct is deemed detrimental to the team and league as a whole. Baker, who has proven himself incapable of staying out of the public eye for the wrong reasons, might fit that description.

The Giants’ decision to cut Baker could come down to whether or not they can get out of his contract, and the $9 million that’s guaranteed to him this coming season. Depending on the language, if they can determine Baker violated his deal to the point of financial implications, then the Giants can void the rest of the money they owe the Georgia product.

In his only season in the NFL with the Giants, Baker didn’t record a single interception, and had 61 combined tackles. He was expected to be a member of the Giants starting secondary next season.
