The Washington Redskins are headed for a name change, and a new option is gaining some traction.

Things have finally come to a head for the Washington Redskins franchise, as their controversial nickname is headed for a change soon. Concerns over racial inequality have renewed the push for a name change. Sponsors have jumped off the Redskins’ bandwagon, and retailers have stopped selling team merchandise until the name is changed.

There are plenty of options out there for the Redskins to change their name to, realistic, creative or otherwise. But a new option is apparently gaining real traction with a solid segment of the fan base.

On Thursday, Sam Fortier of the Washington Post tweeted that the name “Redwolves” is gaining serious traction in Washington. Current Redskins defensive lineman Jonathan Allen has apparently hyped the name on Twitch, former Redskin Will Compton has supported it on Twitter and a fan petition supporting the name has topped 3,500 signatures.

The Redskins are planning to move away from Native American imagery with the new name, which would seem to rule out the nickname “Warriors” right off the bat. “Red Tails”, as a nod to the Tuskegee Airmen in WWII, has been a popular new nickname option for the Washington football team as well. If the change is made before the 2020 season starts, which seems possible, keeping the burgundy and gold colors will be mandatory.

But Compton has passed along what a design of the “Washington Redwolves” uniforms might look like, and it’s pretty sweet looking. There’s even a slogan–A Wolf Doesn’t Concern Himself With The Opinions Of Sheep.

Owner Daniel Snyder’s 2013 assertion that the Redskins name would never be changed always seemed foolish, and right or wrong the time for the change is now. So how does the “Washington Redwolves” sound to you?
