Yoenis Cespedes will ‘definitely’ be playing this season.

If you are a New York Mets fan who has been holding their breath waiting to hear which players were opting out of the shortened 2020 MLB season, you can let that breath out now, Yoenis Cespedes is opting in.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Cespedes has assured he will “definitely be ready” to play when the team opens up their season in just under two weeks.

“I’m not here to prove anything to anybody, but to prove something to myself,” Cespedes said.

This will be a bit of a homecoming for Cespedes who hasn’t played for the Mets since July 20, 2018. He assures the media he feels in much better shape than his last outing.

The Mets seem hopeful that Yoenis Cespedes is ready

The Mets appear hopeful and on-board with Cespedes’ self-assessment.

“Last week, we talked about Cespedes and my optimism and I made the definitive statement that [he] can hit,’’ Van Wagenen said during a Zoom call Friday (h/t NY Post) “What he’s shown here — and everyone saw him hit the home run in the intrasquad game — we’re very excited about what the impact of his bat can be.”

The Mets open their season against the Atlanta Braves on July 24.
