Nick Foles needs to start for the Bears to dethrone the Packers

If the Chicago Bears want to succeed in 2020, Mitchell Trubisky shouldn’t be on the field

The Chicago Bears fanbase isn’t having the greatest time currently. Sure, they can make fun of the Green Bay Packers for selecting quarterback Jordan Love in the NFL Draft, despite the fact Aaron Rodgers has four years remaining on his current contract.

But, the Bears will always be remembered for trading multiple draft picks to move up one spot in the 2017 draft to select Mitchell Trubisky. To make matters worse, the team selected the unproven UNC signal caller over the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. Ouch.

The writing is currently on the wall for Trubisky, as the team declined his fifth-year option. If the Bears want to dethrone the Packers this upcoming season, the only way they can do so is if Nick Foles is under center.

Let’s start things off by talking about Trubisky. He had a good, not great, season in 2018. Trubisky did just enough to not cost the Bears games upon clinching the NFC North title. Of course, they were shocked by, ironically, the Foles-led Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round.

Last season, Trubisky was a detriment to the Bears offense. Look no further than his 3,138 yards and a 17:10 touchdown/interception ratio. Simply put, Trubisky doesn’t have that clutch gene.

Meanwhile, Foles is the epitome of clutch. This is the guy replaced Eli Manning as the ultimate underdog in the NFL. Foles led the Eagles to two consecutive deep playoff runs for the Eagles.

In his first run, Foles helped take down Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. The following postseason, the quarterback was close to pulling off an upset against the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Divisional Round, if Alshon Jeffery hadn’t tipped an on-target pass up in the air for an easy game-ending interception.

Overall, Foles has a 68.1 completion percentage, along with 1,688 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions through six playoff games.

Entering this upcoming season, Foles has an advantage over Trubisky. He’s working alongside former Eagles quarterbacks coaches Bill Lazor (2013) and John DeFilippo (2016-17), whom the latter played a role in Foles’ miraculous Super Bowl trip. That alone proves why Foles should be handed the proverbial keys to the car

The Bears can’t start Trubisky just to justify his second overall selection back in 2017. That experiment has failed. If Foles outperforms him in training camp, the Bears have to send Trubisky down the depth chart, especially if they want to beat the Packers for the division crown in 2020.
