Despite the Patriots’ 11 years of dominance in the AFC East, the Bills are favorites in 2020.

The Buffalo Bills are favorites in many eyes over the New England Patriots this upcoming season.

Buffalo finished the 2019 season second in the AFC East at 10-6, two games behind the 12-4 Patriots. Slotted at the No. 5 seed, the Bills’ season ended in a 22-19 overtime Wild Card loss against the Houston Texans. Meanwhile, the Patriots held home-field advantage in their Wild Card showdown and were upset 20-13 by the Tennessee Titans.

With quarterback Josh Allen entering his third season at the helm for the Bills and Sean McDermott entering year four as the Bills head coach, this team seems poised to have their best season yet with this duo.

Hence, there are three reasons why this team should be favored over the Patriots in 2020.

Bills trending upwards

In McDermott’s first year on the job, he led this franchise to its first playoff berth since 1999. Since then, the Bills have made the postseason twice in the past three seasons. In 2018, the Bills drafted Allen at No. 7 overall. In 2019, Allen took a leap with his on-field production and heading into year three he has Pro Bowl performance expectations.

The Bills have also been aggressive this offseason improving their playoff-caliber team and enter the year with high expectations. Meanwhile, the Patriots appear to be trending downward.

While the 2019 Patriots were 12-4, the offense regressed with Tom Brady under center. They ended the season with back-to-back losses capping their season. A Week 17 upset to Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Miami Dolphins bumped the team down from second seed in the AFC to the third seed which led to their early postseason exit.

Momentum alone and natural progression favors the Bills heading into 2020.
