Did Chris Jones just the let cat out of the bag about a long-term extension?

Chris Jones may be a member for the Kansas City Chiefs for a long time soon.

The Pro Bowl defensive lineman was slapped with the franchise tag back in the spring, as was expected with the former second-round pick out of Mississippi State University back in 2016. Jones is arguably the best defensive player on the defending Super Bowl champions, but a long-term extension was the only way he’d be back in Kansas City beyond 2020.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, Jones tweeted, “God thank you [prayer emoji]”. In the hours since, he has liked a handful of tweets implying that he’s coming back to Kansas City on a long-term deal (h/t Matt Verderame). How excited should Chiefs Kingdom be about this supposed signing? When should we expect the I’s to be dotted and the T’s to be crossed?

Chris Jones on a long-term deal with the Kansas City Chiefs would be huge.

Jones’ representation have until Wednesday, July 15 to finalize a long-term deal with the Chiefs, as he would have to play on the 2020 NFL franchise tag otherwise. Though general manager Brett Veach could find new and creative ways to come up with more cap space for 2021, letting Jones play on the tag would signify he might not coming back after year five in Kansas City.

Fortunately for Chiefs Kingdom, it does not seem to be the case. Now that the Chiefs have locked up superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes through the 2031 NFL season, Veach can put all of his focus in getting Jones under contract beyond 2020. Next up would have to be getting tight end Travis Kelce an extension to beat George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers to the punch.

If what Jones indicates is true, then Kansas City’s Super Bowl window remains wide open. Technically, it will remain open for as long as Mahomes plays at a Pro Bowl level. However, not even a superstar quarterback like the reigning Super Bowl MVP can do it alone. He needs help and he looks to be getting it in a big way with Jones likely inking a long-term deal with the Chiefs.

With Jones supposedly getting an extension, Kansas City can keep on winning Super Bowls.
