Aaron Rodgers needs his young receivers to step up in 2020

Aaron Rodgers will need plenty of help from his young Green Bay Packers receivers in 2020.

The Green Bay Packers made it all the way to last year’s NFC Championship Game without much help for Aaron Rodgers at the wide receiver position. Davante Adams remained the stud of the group, but he still failed to reach 1,000 yards in his 12 total games.

After Adams came Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Geronimo Allison in terms of receiving yards. Allison is now a member of the Detroit Lions.

The lack of production seemed to mean the Packers would target receivers this offseason. Instead, the front office used its first-round pick on quarterback Jordan Love and not one single pick was used on a receiver. The best free agent signed was Devin Funchess, who appeared in one game last season.

A conspiracy theorist may see the Packers’ offseason plan as one to sabotage Rodgers’ chances of winning another Super Bowl in town. This seems crazy, but one of the biggest positions of need was completely ignored.

However, this could point toward a lot of faith in the likes of Lazard, Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown. Is this the smart move? That remains to be seen.

Rodgers can only work with the players the front office chooses. He already has a reliable target in Adams. Aaron Jones is also a great option out of the backfield and finished third on the team in receiving yards last season.

Lazard also stepped up in a big way after barely seeing time on the field in 2018. He played in all 16 games and was second on the team with 477 yards.

Funchess is a low-risk signing, but the fact he spent nearly all of 2019 on injured reserve with a broken collarbone makes him another unknown heading into the season. Will he get back to his old ways? Before that he had 549 yards in 2018 with the Carolina Panthers.

The only way this offense thrives in 2020 is if a clear number two receiver emerges opposite Adams. Jimmy Graham is no longer in Green Bay and that eliminates last year’s leading tight end from the equation. That is at least one position where the Packers drafted help in the form of Josiah Deguara.

The entire franchise is in a weird spot after using a first-round pick on a quarterback. History is repeating itself in Green Bay and fans will be hoping Rodgers can rally his young receivers together to avoid another rushed transition period up north.
