If college football season is pushed to spring, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence should sit out
By John Buhler
Would Trevor Lawrence opt out if college football is delayed until the spring?
Trevor Lawrence is projected to be the first pick in the upcoming NFL draft, as long as nothing else changes between now and next April. However, college football is running out of time to safely hold the college football season this fall and the prospect of spring football could be the last resort.
With the NFL already saying they’re not pushing back the date of the 2021 NFL Draft April 29, Lawrence and other projected top picks may elect to opt out and prepare for the draft rather than risk injury that close to the draft.
Why would Trevor Lawrence waste his time with spring football in 2021?
Simply put, if college football has to be played in the spring, it would be a colossal waste of time for Lawrence. If there’s no football this fall at the college level, then Lawrence has played his last snap for free. He has too much money to make as the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Carolina Panthers or some other NFL team that ends up being terrible.
If Lawrence wanted to play for the love of the game in the spring, he still shouldn’t do it. His draft stock can only go down at this point. Nobody will be able to usurp him by playing in a spring football season Lawrence and his family should have no interest taking part of. He’d have a like a month to get ready for the NFL Draft in Cleveland. Why take an unnecessary beating for free?
Even if it’s conference-only football this fall, that should be the last time Lawrence takes the field for the Tigers. If he wins a national championship this fall and takes home the Heisman Trophy, he surpasses Deshaun Watson as the greatest player in program history. Though his stock could dip this fall a bit if he doesn’t play up to lofty expectations, it’s still worth it for him to play this fall.
However, spring football involving Lawrence is not a copacetic endeavor. If the season is pushed back to 2021, Lawrence needs to hire an agent and prepare for the upcoming draft. His two years worth of work as the Clemson quarterback will have provided NFL scouts enough tape to make an obvious decision to take him No. 1 overall in the upcoming draft. It’s not that hard.
Lawerence has done enough in two years to never take a snap in spring college football.
