Trevor Lawrence will break Patrick Mahomes’ record contract in 5-6 years
By Max Smith
Patrick Mahomes has the biggest contract in sports, but Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence could top that in five or six years.
Sports contracts get bigger and bigger every year, especially in the NFL. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ astronomical contract will eventually be topped and Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence may be the one to do it.
Looking back, 10 years ago, the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback was Peyton Manning, who was making $15.8 million per year with the Colts. In the most lucrative year of Mahomes’ new deal, he’ll make just under $60 million. In only ten years, the value for a superstar quarterback has nearly quadrupled.
While you may think it’s too early to argue that Lawrence will be as good as Mahomes, it’s not. Lawrence is that dude. He is a once-in-a-lifetime talent who was put on this earth to be an NFL quarterback.
Trevor Lawrence could shatter the record for the biggest contract in sports.
Lawrence is already the undisputed projected No. 1 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. His collegiate accomplishments are already outstanding. In his freshman year, he won the National Championship as a freshman after tossing a record 30 touchdowns for a freshman and only four picks. He made the National Championship Game again after his sophomore season but was out-dueled by Joe Burrow.
A top-end quarterback is arguably the most valuable position in sports. When a team has a chance to lock up a player like Mahomes or Lawrence for the long run, they’ll back up the Brinks truck and most of the time, it’ll be worth it.
Remember, Lamar Jackson is still yet to get paid by the Ravens. If he plays anything like he did last season, there’s a chance that he will break Mahomes’ record contract. When teams draft a superstar quarterback, they will do everything they can to keep hold of them. There will never be a justification for letting that type of player walk.
When Lawrence is up for a new deal after his third or fourth year on his rookie contract, Lawrence will undoubtedly sign a contract that dwarfs Mahomes’ half-a-billion deal. And it’s no disrespect to Mahomes, it’s just the nature of the market and exponential growth, especially as it relates to quarterback money.
