NFL Draft expert makes bold JT Daniels-Jamie Newman claim ahead of Georgia camp
Could JT Daniels end up winning Georgia’s starting quarterback job over Jamie Newman?
As soon as former Wake Forest quarterback Jamie Newman announced he’d grad transfer to play his final year with Georgia, Bulldogs fans have been buzzing in Athens. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder is considered a dark horse Heisman Trophy contender and is already projected as a first-round NFL Draft pick for 2021.
However, is it possible he won’t be the team’s starting quarterback this campaign? Holy smokes, what a thought. That’s exactly what NFL Draft expert Matt Miller has on his mind, as he’s come out and said he believes USC transfer JT Daniels may have the edge in the quarterback battle leading up to fall camp.
Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman is projected as a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft
Daniels announced in late May he’ll be making the move from Southern Cal to Athens. Interestingly enough, it was also revealed on Monday that the NCAA has granted him immediate eligibility, opening the door for him and Newman to go head-to-head for the starting job once camp opens up in August.
Many out there believe Newman will be Georgia’s starting quarterback this season given his experience with the Demon Deacons. Last fall, Newman threw for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns, while adding 574 yards rushing and six more scores. That was with a much less talented group of offensive weapons at Wake Forest. Imagine what he’ll be able to do with Georgia’s playmakers at his disposal.
As for Daniels, he’s a former 5-star recruit and was USC’s starter entering the 2019 campaign. Unfortunately for him, he suffered a serious knee injury in a Week 1 win over Fresno State and missed the rest of the season. Now healthy, Daniels wants to try and live up to his 5-star rating and is set on making noise in the SEC with Georgia.
The quarterback race all of a sudden feels much closer for the Bulldogs. Kirby Smart will have quite the decision to make in who will be replacing Jake Fromm under center.
