Cam Newton will make Sony Michel a better fantasy performer in 2020
By John Buhler
Cam Newton has the chance to make Sony Michel a good fantasy player.
By signing former NFL MVP Cam Newton to a one-year deal, the New England Patriots offense just got a whole lot more interesting. Though they had the GOAT Tom Brady for the previous 20 years, he wasn’t exactly the most mobile of quarterbacks in the pocket for New England. Newton’s threat as a runner is huge for the Patriots, as well as running backs like Sony Michel.
The Fantasy Footballers looked at the Patriots, as well as all their division rivals in their episode breaking down all AFC East teams. While there isn’t any offense in the division that should really get you excited about fantasy football, the idea that Newton plays for the Patriots has fantasy players buzzers, and for good reason.
Check out The Fantasy Footballers for all their advice.
Should we expect Newton to find pay dirt after pay dirt in the red zone leading the New England offense? I mean, he will score touchdowns with his legs, as that’s a part of his game. However, he’s not the runner he used to be in his 20s coming out of Auburn University. Then again, his mobility just may be the reason he beats out Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer for the starting job.
How much does Sony Michel benefit from having Cam Newton on the team?
Newton may never be the most accurate passer in football, but the ever-present threat of making a play or two with his legs will afford easier throwing lanes than he’d face if he was a statue in the pocket. Not only that, but his presence as a runner makes things easier for the ground game around him. Look for Michel to be a huge beneficiary of that in 2020 with Newton on the team.
New England did use a late first-round pick on Michel in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was a phenomenal college player for the Georgia Bulldogs. While his college teammate Nick Chubb has had a better pro career thus far with the Cleveland Browns, Michel may benefit from playing alongside a mobile quarterback like Jonathan Stewart, and to some extent, Christian McCaffrey.
Are we saying Michel will play like McCaffrey now that he’s paired alongside Newton? No, but we do stand a chance of seeing him outplay his terrible ADP of RB37. At this time Michel may not be draftable, but he could be undervalued entering the 2020 season by virtue of playing next to one of the greatest running quarterbacks of all time in Newton. Keep an eye on Michel this fall.
