3. Le’Veon Bell

Jets’ head coach Adam Gase doesn’t make any secret of his desire to “lessen the load” on Bell in 2020. Translated into plain language that means that New York understands giving Bell the ball frequently is a poor offensive philosophy.

His pitiful rushing average of just 3.2 yards per carry in 2019 backs up that conclusion. Bell’s glory days with the Steelers seem like a long time ago. He no longer has the explosion or wiggle in the whole required to make opposing tacklers miss.

The only real value Bell can provide the Jets at this point in his career is in the passing game. He’s still a decent, but unremarkable pass-catcher out of the backfield. The team’s decision to invest serious resources in signing Bell is a big reason why the Jets haven’t surrounded Darnold with the kind of weapons he needs to be successful.

The expectations around Bell need to decrease if he’s going to have any shot at success. He has no shot to become a Pro Bowler or an All-Pro. The Jets should be overjoyed if he can become a quality starter again in 2020.
