14. Virginia Tech Hokies 2013 Hokie Stone Alternate

Unless you are a big fan of the Virginia Tech Hokies or are from Blacksburg, VA, you probably are wondering what a “Hokie Stone” is. According to Wikipedia, it’s limestone rock.

"Hokie Stone is a grey dolomite—limestone rock found near Blacksburg, in western Virginia. It gets its name from the traditional nickname attributed to students and alumni of Virginia Tech. Hokie Stone is quarried by Virginia Tech for campus projects and is prominently displayed on the majority of buildings throughout the Blacksburg campus."

Well, there you have it.

Now, it seems like a pretty simple task to design a uniform based on a rock but sometimes, the easiest of tasks can be widely overthought.

Back in 2013, the Virginia Tech Hokies decided to pay homage to the Hokie Stone, and it is safe to say it did not go well. Just as we’ve seen before, the helmet itself is not all that terrible but not matching it with the rest of the uniform, did not support a good look for Virginia Tech in their game versus the Maryland Terrapins.

Because of the different grays used on the helmet, the pants themselves seem to be off while only rocking one shade of gray. Throw in the regular Hokie home jersey at the time and you have a lot going on. This look would’ve been better had they worn the helmet with an all-white look, which they eventually did a few years later, with a tweak to helmet itself as well. If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again.
