Tom Brady honors civil rights legend John Lewis upon death
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady tweeted out a heartfelt post to honor John Lewis
On Saturday morning, heartbreaking news arrived in the United States, as it was announced civil rights hero and longtime U.S. congressman John Lewis passed away at age 80. For the past six months, Lewis was battling cancer.
As you might expect, Lewis and his entire family have been showered with love and support on social media following the devastating update. This includes Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback and six-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady.
Brady took to Twitter to let everyone know exactly what Lewis meant to him, and the country as a whole.

Brady nailed it with his tweet, as America truly lost a hero this weekend. Lewis, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Dec. 2019, was widely known as a man who always fought for civil rights and did so in a non-violent fashion. Per CNN, Lewis previously stated he had been arrested for peaceful protests more than 40 times.
Still, that was never going to stop him from voicing his displeasure with the unfair way he felt his brothers and sisters in African American communities were being treated. In 1965, he was brutally beaten up by police in Selma, Ala., but survived to tell his story.
From that moment, he wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, something he surely succeeded at.
“I have been in some kind of fight — for freedom, equality, basic human rights — for nearly my entire life. I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now,” Lewis said in a statement following his cancer diagnosis.
Brady, getting ready for his first campaign away from the New England Patriots, knows the kind of impact Lewis had on this country.
