5. Oregon football breakout players: Tyler Shough

Tyler Shough is expected to succeed Justin Herbert under center for the Ducks. Herbert was the No. 6 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers but expectations are high for Shough to step in and not miss a beat.

Shough was the seventh-ranked pro-style quarterback in the 2018 class. He only threw 15 passes last season but completed 12 for 144 yards. He has a big arm and he can move around the pocket really well. The one thing he isn’t lacking in is confidence, and that’s crucial when replacing a talent like Justin Herbert.

He stands at 6’5 and 225 pounds. If you built a typical quarterback in a lab, the measurements you see from Shough would be as close as you’re going to get.

The real reason we see Ducks’ head coach Mario Cristobal going with Shough is they want to have consistency under center. They aren’t built like Oklahoma where they can replace a Heisman candidate every season. He has the talent to go crazy through the air in the Pac-12. With a much softer start than the Ducks originally planned for, he’s in a position to succeed.
