Suicide Squad: David Ayer sparks ‘Release the Ayer Cut’ to trend online
By Mia Johnson
Suicide Squad’s Ayer Cut has been trending all thanks to the director himself.
DC fans are hopeful that another DCEU movie can get the Justice League/Snyder Cut treatment. Today, #ReleaseTheAyerCut began trending on Twitter, and it’s all thanks to the man himself: director David Ayer.
Just like Zack Snyder with Justice League, Ayer’s name was still attached to 2016’s Suicide Squad. But, as evident by the movie’s final result, something was amiss. Various scenes were cut or redone, which eventually led to the final cut that made it on screen. And apparently, some fans have found evidence of what an Ayer Cut could look like if it were fully developed under his vision.
On Twitter today, Ayer responded to a fan who wanted to know if everything that had been written in his script was filmed. (Including the rumored scenes that we didn’t get to see in the final cut.) Attached to that tweet was a screenshot of the script featuring a significant scene where the Joker appears during a climactic moment and talks to the group. It’s a pretty exciting scene given Joker was significantly cut out of the final movie, and it shows there was certainly a lot of potential for his character.
As Ayer mentions in the tweet, none of this was meant to be seen by the public. And yet, here we are. But whether or not Warner Bros. will give fans the Snyder Cut treatment is still up for the studio to decide.
The movie has notoriously been paired with Justice League as one of the worst DCEU movies. So if Warner Bros. is feeling Wlucky about their chances at flipping these movies, they might side with fans one more time. Of course, that means the company is shelling out a lot of time, money, and effort to basically make a brand new movie. But at the same time, Ayer has confirmed the footage is all there. So it might be worth another risk to make another director’s cut specially for HBO Max so the original vision for Suicide Squad can be seen.
This, though, may all depend on people’s reactions to the Snyder Cut of Justice League. If there’s low interest or viewership by the time it’s released, then DC and Warner Bros. will have learned their lesson not to invest in anymore “cut” movements. But if it does garner a lot of interest, then maybe the Ayer Cut does have a shot at seeing the light.
