Justin Fields has the weapons to win the Heisman Trophy
After finishing in third place last year, Justin Fields will make another run at the Heisman in 2020.
College football is no certainty this season, but one thing is, Justin Fields. After a stellar debut season in 2019, Fields is out to prove that last year was no fluke, that instead, he is the best quarterback in the nation.
Fields entered the picture in Ohio State, won the job and performed. 3,273 yards, 41 touchdowns, and just three, yes three, interceptions for a quarterbacks rating of 181.4, fifth last season.
Now, imagine what is possible in his second year, with all the experience of a Playoff run behind him. Many limit Fields primarily to an athlete but are quick to forget about his passing abilities.
Take a look at this accuracy chart, where Fields ranks above who many would believe to be the nation’s best pocket quarterback, Trevor Lawrence.
Then you add in the fact that Fields was the second-best passer when it comes to first-down yardage and you have one of the best quarterbacks there is, independent of his impact on the ground.
While Fields has the talent to boast, his surrounding pieces are equally as important.
Simultaneously, Fields has receivers suited for his skillset. He will be losing some significant pieces, notably the school’s top man in receptions in A.J. Hill, but has young receivers ready to thrive.
His go-to target, Chris Olave, put up 849 receiving yards and a dozen touchdowns last season, with another downfield threat in Garrett Wilson behind him.
There is a perfect combination of riches right now in Ohio State. Athletic receivers to catch up with Field’s powerful arm or those that can give him the space to put that blistering speed into action.
Put those two together and you have one of the best offenses in the nation and a Heisman favorite in Justin Fields.
